FAQ

When does a word count as known?

You can explain at least one common meaning or understand it in a usual context. Do not select a word merely because you can pronounce it, recognise its spelling or guess from its form. Use the same standard throughout.

Why does stage two vary in length?

Stage two is generated from stage one. Earlier answers are reused, so the number of new words can differ between people.

Does this measure my overall English level?

It estimates English word recognition. It does not separately measure listening, speaking, reading or writing, and is not a CEFR level or an official exam result.

Can I leave and continue later?

When local storage is available, choices save in this browser on this device. Return and choose “Continue your test”. Progress does not sync to other devices and is lost if browser data is cleared.
